![]() ![]() Each of the five trials in the competition balance gripping action with character development that drives the plot toward a thrilling conclusion, setting up the next book in the duology. Trans and genderqueer identities are common as well, including Teo as a transmasc semidioce with joyful gender affirming and mentoring experiences. ![]() Names, games, foods and a range of skin colors found in the Latine diaspora are represented amongst the characters, and Thomas skillfully creates a familiarity and fondness for both the fantasy world and characters with small details throughout the novel. Thomas offers a complex world with morals to mull over, and the characters read as authentically teen, with loose allusions to real world social media. Teo, a Jade semidiĆ³s and son of the bird Goddess Quetzal, is worried about his Gold friends who might be selected to compete, but in an unforeseen turn of fate, Teo finds himself among the chosen. ![]() ![]() Every ten years, Gold semidioces use their inherited supernatural powers to compete for two honors: the winner of the Trials will be the Sun's chosen hero, and the loser will be sacrificed to replenish the power that keeps the Obsidians confined. Obsidians, one of three kinds of Gods in Thomas' Latine infused world, are imprisoned in the stars with monsters, while the other Gods, Golds and Jades, protects mortals, run cities on Reino del Sol, and prepare their semidioce (half-God) children for the Sunbearer Trials. ![]()
